American ships formed a line across Soviet shipping routes, with orders to stop and board any vessel headed for the island.
Enterprise was part of that force. As the Navy's newest and most powerful carrier, her presence was both operational and symbolic. The Soviets knew what she was. They knew what her air wing could do. For a time, there was serious debate about whether to build more nuclear carriers or return to conventional oil-fired propulsion for future ships.
Enterprise kept making the argument for herself. She was fast — faster than any oil-powered carrier. She was self-sufficient in a way that no other ship in the fleet could match. And she projected a kind of presence in foreign ports and in the eyes of adversaries that went beyond what tonnage and aircraft numbers could convey. The Path to Vietnam
By 1965, the conflict in Vietnam had escalated from an advisory mission to a full-scale air war. Enterprise would join it, becoming the first nuclear-powered warship in history to conduct combat operations — but that story belongs to her next chapter.
