USS John F. Kennedy (CV-67) was the last conventionally powered supercarrier built for the U.S. Navy and the only ship of her class — a modified Kitty Hawk-class design. Commissioned September 7, 1968 at Newport News and named for the assassinated 35th president, "Big John" served thirty-eight years across the Cold War, the post-Cold War era, and the early Global War on Terror. She made eighteen Mediterranean deployments, conducted strikes during the 1986 Libya operation (Operation El Dorado Canyon), served as flagship of the Red Sea battle group during Operation Desert Storm in 1991, and surged in response to the September 11 attacks. Originally homeported at Norfolk, she later sailed from Mayport, Florida. Decommissioned March 23, 2007, JFK was the last steam-powered, conventionally fueled supercarrier in U.S. Navy service. This framed ship photo is a tribute to her crew and the legacy of the Navy's final conventional carrier.
