USS Laboon (DDG-58) is an Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer, commissioned March 18, 1995 at Bath Iron Works and named for Captain John Francis "Jake" Laboon, S.J. — a Jesuit priest and decorated Navy chaplain who served as a submarine officer in World War II before answering a different call. Father Laboon ministered to Sailors and Marines through the Vietnam War and remains one of the most beloved chaplains in Navy history. Homeported at Naval Station Norfolk, USS Laboon has deployed across the Mediterranean, Persian Gulf, and Red Sea, and in September 2014 became one of the first U.S. warships to launch Tomahawk strikes against ISIS in Syria. This framed ship photo is a tribute to her crew and the chaplain whose name she carries.
