USS Midway's "Sayonara" photo marks her departure from Yokosuka, Japan in August 1991, ending a seventeen-year tour as the forward-deployed carrier of the U.S. 7th Fleet — the longest such assignment in U.S. Navy history. After steaming home to North Island in San Diego, she was decommissioned April 11, 1992, closing nearly forty-seven years of continuous active service that began eight days after V-J Day. Her replacement on the Yokosuka station, USS Independence (CV-62), took up the watch as Midway sailed for the West Coast one last time. For the Sailors, families, and Yokosuka community who had called her home for nearly two decades, this farewell was the end of an era. This framed ship photo is a tribute to her crew and the legacy of her decades of forward presence in the Western Pacific.
