USS Peleliu (LHA-5) was the fifth and final ship of the Tarawa class — the U.S. Navy's first generation of large amphibious assault ships, designed to combine the helicopter-carrier role of the LPH with the landing-ship and cargo-ship roles of the LSD and LKA in a single hull. Commissioned May 3, 1980 at Pascagoula, Mississippi and named for the 1944 Battle of Peleliu in the Western Pacific, she served thirty-five years from her San Diego homeport. Her career spanned multiple Western Pacific and Persian Gulf deployments, Operation Eastern Exit in Somalia in 1991, support for Operation Iraqi Freedom, and humanitarian assistance after the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. She was decommissioned March 31, 2015. This framed ship photo is a tribute to her crew and the legacy of one of the longest-serving Tarawa-class amphibs.
