USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71) is the fourth ship of the Nimitz class, commissioned October 25, 1986 at Newport News, Virginia and named for the 26th President of the United States. Known by her crew as "The Big Stick" — a nod to President Roosevelt's famous foreign-policy maxim — TR has served nearly forty years as one of the Navy's most heavily deployed nuclear carriers. She launched the first carrier combat sorties of Operation Desert Storm from the Red Sea in January 1991, conducted strikes during Operation Deliberate Force over Bosnia in 1995, and surged for sustained combat operations after the September 11 attacks. Her later career has included strike operations against ISIS, multiple Mediterranean and Persian Gulf deployments, and forward-deployed operations across the Western Pacific. Originally homeported at Norfolk, she now sails from San Diego. This framed ship photo is a tribute to her crew and the legacy of "The Big Stick."
