    USS Antietam (CG-54) commissioned in June 1987, and within a year she was making her maiden deployment into the Western Pacific. Named for the Battle of Antietam — September 17, 1862, the bloodiest single day in American history — she carried that fighting name into a new era of naval warfare. Armed with the Aegis Combat System and trained for the Cold War, Antietam's first cruise crew did what every first crew does: they made the ship their own and brought her home with her reputation intact.
