USS Bonhomme Richard (CVA-31) carries one of the most storied names in American naval history — the flagship from which John Paul Jones spoke his immortal words: "I have not yet begun to fight!" on September 23, 1779, as his battered vessel grappled with HMS Serapis during the Revolutionary War. Commissioned on November 26, 1945, the Essex-class carrier served proudly through the Cold War era, redesignated CVS-31 as she took on the critical antisubmarine warfare mission, before decommissioning on July 2, 1971.
