USS Briscoe (DD-977) was a Spruance-class destroyer commissioned December 1, 1978, named in honor of Rear Admiral Robert P. Briscoe, a decorated veteran of World War II and Korea who commanded destroyers and served at every level of naval leadership. Homeported in Norfolk, Virginia, Briscoe carried the fight across the Atlantic and Mediterranean — from Cold War NATO exercises to the sands of Operation Desert Storm. As the post-Soviet world grew more complex, she adapted, enforcing sanctions and standing ready in a new era of global instability. Decommissioned June 27, 2003, after 25 years of faithful service, Briscoe answered her country's call every time the nation needed her most.
