USS Detroit (AOE-4) deployed for Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm in 1990–91, carrying out the mission that fast combat support ships were built for: keeping the fleet armed and ready in a combat theater. As coalition naval forces built up in the Persian Gulf and Red Sea and Desert Storm's campaign unfolded, Detroit's crew delivered fuel, ammunition, and provisions underway — sustaining the combat power of the warships around her. Named for Detroit, Michigan, and commissioned in 1968, she was part of the industrial and logistical backbone of American sea power at the moment it was called to fight.
