When USS Essex deployed to the Mediterranean in 1960-61, the Cold War was at one of its most volatile moments. Khrushchev and Kennedy faced off over Berlin, over the nuclear balance, over the future of Europe. As an anti-submarine warfare carrier (CVS-9), Essex's mission was to find, track, and be prepared to neutralize the Soviet submarines that prowled beneath the Atlantic and Mediterranean. The crew of CVS-9 sailed into that tension without fanfare, doing the quiet, relentless work that kept the peace. They didn't fire a shot — they didn't need to. Presence was the mission.
