Commissioned in 1945 and modernized into one of the most capable attack carriers in the fleet, USS Franklin D. Roosevelt (CVA-42) earned a distinguished record across decades of Cold War service. The 1966-67 VIETNAM deployment took Roosevelt to Yankee Station in the Gulf of Tonkin, where her air wing flew combat missions over North Vietnam — sustained operations in some of the most heavily defended airspace in the world.
