USS George Washington (CVN-73) is the sixth ship of the Nimitz class, commissioned July 4, 1992 at Newport News, Virginia and named for the first President of the United States. With the motto "Spirit of Freedom," GW has served across more than thirty years of fleet operations including Operation Southern Watch over Iraq, post-9/11 surge deployments, and humanitarian relief in Haiti following the 2010 earthquake. From 2008 to 2015 she was forward-deployed to Yokosuka, Japan as the U.S. 7th Fleet's on-station carrier — the first nuclear-powered carrier ever based in Japan, succeeding the long-serving USS Kitty Hawk. She returned to Yokosuka in 2024 following a multi-year refueling and complex overhaul at Newport News. This framed ship photo is a tribute to her crew and the legacy of the Navy's flagship of forward presence in the Western Pacific.
