USS John Paul Jones (DDG-53) is an Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer, commissioned December 18, 1993 at Pascagoula, Mississippi and named for John Paul Jones — the Continental Navy captain widely regarded as the Father of the U.S. Navy, immortalized for his defiant 1779 reply at the Battle of Flamborough Head: "I have not yet begun to fight!" Homeported at Pearl Harbor, John Paul Jones serves as the Pacific Fleet's premier ballistic missile defense test platform — the first ship in the fleet to operate the Aegis Baseline 9 Combat System with integrated air and ballistic missile defense, and the launch platform for many of the U.S. Navy's most consequential SM-3 intercept tests.
