USS Midway (CV-41) was the lead ship of her class of large aircraft carriers, commissioned September 10, 1945 — eight days after the Japanese surrender that ended World War II. Built at Newport News Shipbuilding, she was the first U.S. carrier too large to transit the Panama Canal and was the largest ship in the world at the time of her commissioning. Midway served forty-seven years through three major reconfigurations, multiple Vietnam-era combat deployments including the 1975 evacuation of Saigon, and Operation Desert Storm in 1991, where she launched the first strikes against Iraqi forces. For seventeen years she was forward-deployed to Yokosuka, Japan as the on-station carrier of the U.S. 7th Fleet — the longest such assignment in Navy history. She was decommissioned April 11, 1992, and lives on today as a museum ship at Navy Pier in San Diego. This framed ship photo is a tribute to her crew and the legacy of the longest-serving aircraft carrier of the 20th-century U.S. Navy.
