USS Nimitz (CVN-68) is the lead ship of her ten-ship class of nuclear-powered supercarriers, commissioned May 3, 1975 at Newport News, Virginia. Named for Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, the wartime commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet, she was the second nuclear carrier in the U.S. Navy and the largest warship in the world at her commissioning. Her career has spanned more than five decades and nearly every major U.S. military operation of the late 20th and early 21st centuries — including Operation Eagle Claw, the 1980 Iran hostage rescue attempt; the 1981 Gulf of Sidra incident; Operation Southern Watch over Iraq; Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan; and Operation Iraqi Freedom. Originally homeported at Norfolk, she has since been based at Bremerton, Washington and San Diego. This framed ship photo is a tribute to her crew and the legacy of the U.S. Navy's flagship of the nuclear era.
