USS O'Kane (DDG-77) was commissioned on October 23, 1999, at Bath, Maine. Named for Rear Admiral Richard H. O'Kane, the most decorated submariner in U.S. Navy history — awarded the Medal of Honor for extraordinary heroism commanding USS Tang (SS-306) in World War II. Her maiden deployment in 2001-02 came in the immediate aftermath of September 11, 2001, placing the ship at the forefront of the Navy's response to the Global War on Terror from her very first deployment.
