Operation Desert Shield was the largest deployment of American military power since Vietnam. In August 1990, following Iraq's invasion of Kuwait, the United States led a massive coalition buildup in Saudi Arabia — hundreds of thousands of troops standing watch across the desert while the world watched. Navy warships enforced the blockade, carrier air wings flew combat air patrols day and night, and every Sailor stood ready.
