This commemorative photo features USS Peleliu (LHA-5) and her crew's "SHELLBACK-12" equator crossing — the 2012 line-crossing during which her Sailors and Marines transitioned from Pollywogs to Shellbacks in the time-honored ceremony presided over by King Neptune himself. The Shellback initiation is one of the oldest Navy traditions, dating to the days of sail, and a Pacific deployment that takes a ship south of the equator gives the entire crew a once-in-a-career opportunity to earn their certificates. This framed ship photo is a tribute to her crew and the long Navy tradition of crossing the line.
