USS Tarawa (LHA-1) was the lead ship of her class of amphibious assault ships — the U.S. Navy's first generation of large amphibs designed to combine the helicopter-carrier role of the LPH with the landing-ship and cargo-ship roles of the LSD and LKA in a single hull. Commissioned May 29, 1976 at Pascagoula, Mississippi and named for the 1943 Battle of Tarawa in the Gilbert Islands, she served thirty-three years across Western Pacific and Persian Gulf deployments including Operation Earnest Will (1987-88), Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm (1990-91), and Operation Iraqi Freedom (2003). Homeported at San Diego for most of her career, she was decommissioned March 31, 2009. This framed ship photo is a tribute to her crew and the legacy of the lead ship of the Tarawa class.
