By 1967, the skies over North Vietnam were among the most dangerous in the world, and USS America (CVA-66) was there. Deployed to the Western Pacific with Carrier Task Force 77 in the Gulf of Tonkin, her air wing pressed the fight under Operation Rolling Thunder—sending aircraft against North Vietnamese targets day after day despite some of the most concentrated anti-aircraft defenses ever encountered in the history of aerial warfare. The men of the 1967 cruise flew into that fire and did not flinch. Every mission launched from America's deck was a testament to the crew who armed those aircraft, the pilots who flew them, and the ship that made it all possible.
