By 1970, Vietnamization was reshaping the war — ground combat was shifting to South Vietnamese forces, and American troop levels were falling. But the air war was as intense as ever, and USS America (CVA-66) was back on Yankee Station in the Gulf of Tonkin, flying combat missions in support of allied troops and striking enemy supply lines along the Ho Chi Minh Trail. Even as the politicians talked peace, the crew of CVA-66 maintained the watch, answered every tasking, and kept the pressure on.
