USS America

Named for the nation she served, the America was the Atlantic Fleet's grand carrier—a Kitty Hawk-class ship that ranged from the North Atlantic to the Mediterranean and beyond. She struck Libyan targets in 1986 and launched her airwing against Iraqi forces in Desert Storm. Decommissioned in 1996, she may be gone—but her crew remembers her the way she sailed: tall and ready, with the stars and stripes on her island.
