When the Arab Spring ignited in early 2011, it swept aside decades-old regimes and threw the Mediterranean world into upheaval. As Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi unleashed his military against his own people, the United Nations authorized intervention. Operation Odyssey Dawn launched on March 19, 2011, and USS Anzio (CG-68) was in the Mediterranean for the campaign that became NATO's Operation Unified Protector. For months, Anzio helped enforce the no-fly zone and arms embargo that ultimately contributed to Gaddafi's fall on October 20, 2011. The ship named for a decisive Allied breakthrough was part of another turning point in history.
