USS Barney (DDG-6) deployed in 1987–88 into a Mediterranean where tensions were anything but routine. The Iran-Iraq War was raging in the Persian Gulf, the Soviets were still probing Western resolve, and the U.S. Navy was doing what it had always done—showing up. Barney's crew served aboard one of the finest destroyers of the Cold War era, a Charles F. Adams-class DDG that had been holding the line since 1962. This was their cruise, their watch, and their ship.
