USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70) patrolled some of the world's most volatile waters during the 1988 cruise. Operation Earnest Will was in full swing as the Navy escorted Kuwaiti tankers through a Persian Gulf under fire from Iranian forces. In July 1988, USS Vincennes shot down Iran Air Flight 655 in the fog of naval warfare — tension in the Gulf had reached a deadly peak. By August, the Iran-Iraq War ground to a ceasefire after nearly a million casualties. Carl Vinson's sailors stood their watch through one of the most dangerous periods of the late Cold War.
