When USS Chafee (DDG-90) set sail on her maiden deployment in 2005, she carried more than a crew — she carried the name of Senator John H. Chafee, a Marine who fought in two wars, served as Secretary of the Navy, and spent his career championing the men and women of the fleet. Commissioned in March 2005 and homeported at Pearl Harbor, this Arleigh Burke-class Flight IIA destroyer launched her first deployment into a Pacific theater shaped by the ongoing Global War on Terror. The crew of Chafee proved their ship's mettle from day one, standing ready in every sea state and every watch.
