USS Coral Sea (CVA-43) deployed to the Gulf of Tonkin in late 1964, just months after the incidents that changed the course of American involvement in Vietnam. Her attack squadrons flew some of the earliest combat missions of the war, striking targets as U.S. forces committed to what would become a decade-long effort. The 1964–65 cruise placed Coral Sea among the first carriers on the line — in at the beginning, before the world fully understood what was coming.
