As President Nixon's Vietnamization policy began drawing down American ground forces, carrier aviation remained the backbone of U.S. airpower in Southeast Asia. USS Coral Sea (CVA-43) deployed to Yankee Station for the 1969–70 cruise, her air wing flying interdiction missions and providing close air support as the strategic picture shifted. Coral Sea's presence proved that sea-based airpower could sustain the mission even as the ground war evolved.
