USS David R. Ray (DD-971) Spiral Notebook

Commissioned November 19, 1977, USS David R. Ray (DD-971) was a Spruance-class destroyer named for Hospital Corpsman Second Class David Robert Ray, a U.S. Navy corpsman posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions with a Marine reconnaissance unit in Vietnam in 1970.

Homeported in San Diego, David R. Ray served the fleet for a quarter century, including WESTPAC deployments across the Western Pacific and Indian Ocean through the 1980s. She was decommissioned on February 28, 2002, and later sunk as a target during RIMPAC 2008.
