USS Detroit (AOE-4) was the last of the Sacramento-class fast combat support ships, commissioned in 1969 and named for the Motor City. Able to replenish a carrier battle group with fuel, ammunition, and provisions at battle-group speed, she served as the logistics backbone for carrier groups across the Atlantic, Mediterranean, and Arabian Gulf. Her motto, “Superare Optimum” — To Surpass the Best — defined her career. She was decommissioned in 1995.
