The summer of 1965 marked a turning point in Vietnam, and USS Enterprise (CVAN-65) was at the front edge of it. As President Johnson committed the first ground combat troops to South Vietnam, The Big E deployed to the Gulf of Tonkin with Carrier Air Wing Nine, flying strike missions against North Vietnamese targets under Operation Rolling Thunder. Enterprise's aviators faced Soviet-supplied surface-to-air missiles, MiG fighters, and some of the most heavily defended airspace in the history of aerial warfare. This was The Big E's first Vietnam combat cruise — the beginning of years of service in a war that tested the Navy's courage and professionalism in ways that still resonate today.
