By the fall of 1966, the air war over North Vietnam had become one of the most intense sustained bombing campaigns in American history, and USS Enterprise (CVAN-65) was again in the thick of it. Carrier Air Wing Nine flew hundreds of combat sorties against bridges, power plants, rail yards, and supply routes — battling MiGs and surface-to-air missiles to strike targets deep inside North Vietnam. The Big E's crew endured the strain of continuous operations in a war that was growing in both scale and controversy back home, never wavering in their commitment to the men on the ground who depended on air support.
