USS Hornet (CV-12) was an Essex-class aircraft carrier commissioned in 1943, named in honor of the original USS Hornet (CV-8) lost at the Battle of Santa Cruz. She fought in the Pacific during World War II and returned to service as an anti-submarine warfare carrier through the 1960s. In 1969 she earned her greatest distinction as the recovery ship for the Apollo 11 and Apollo 12 astronauts returning from the Moon. Today she is preserved as a museum ship in Alameda, California.
