USS Intrepid (CVA-11) was an Essex-class aircraft carrier commissioned in 1943. She fought across the Pacific in World War II — surviving kamikaze and torpedo strikes to earn the nickname 'The Fighting I' — then served as an attack carrier off Vietnam and as a recovery ship for the Mercury and Gemini space programs. Today she is a museum ship in New York City.
