USS Kitty Hawk (CV-63) was the lead ship of her class — the Navy's first supercarrier of the post-Forrestal era, commissioned April 29, 1961 at Philadelphia Naval Shipyard. Through Vietnam, the long Cold War watch, and the opening years of the Global War on Terror, "Battle Cat" served the fleet for 47 years, the last decade of which she spent forward-deployed to Yokosuka, Japan as the centerpiece of U.S. naval power in the Western Pacific. When she was decommissioned in 2009, she was the last conventionally powered aircraft carrier in active service. This framed ship photo is a tribute to her crew and the legacy of one of the most storied carriers in U.S. Navy history.
