USS Mahan (DDG-72) is an Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer commissioned in 1998 and named for Rear Admiral Alfred Thayer Mahan, the most influential naval strategist of the 19th century. His landmark work, The Influence of Sea Power upon History, shaped the naval doctrines of nations around the world and inspired the modern blue-water navy concept. Homeported in Mayport, Florida, Mahan has deployed to the Mediterranean and Persian Gulf in support of Atlantic Fleet and Fifth Fleet operations.
