USS Midway (CV-41) served as the U.S. Navy's forward-deployed carrier homeported in Yokosuka, Japan. The 1987-88 cruise coincided with Operation Earnest Will, the Navy's escort of Kuwaiti oil tankers through the Persian Gulf during the Iran-Iraq War. Midway and Carrier Air Wing 5 operated in the Western Pacific while the Navy was heavily engaged in tanker escort operations in the Gulf. This sweatshirt commemorates that deployment.
