USS Pharris (FF-1094) was a Knox-class anti-submarine warfare frigate commissioned on October 26, 1974, and named in honor of Boatswain's Mate First Class Jackson C. Pharris, who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for extraordinary heroism during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Severely wounded and nearly unconscious, Pharris repeatedly dove below the waterline of USS California to rescue trapped shipmates and kept the ship's anti-aircraft batteries firing until he could no longer stand. During her 1986 cruise, USS Pharris deployed to the Western Pacific, operating with the Seventh Fleet and conducting the anti-submarine warfare operations for which the Knox class was designed. Pharris and her crew carried their namesake's legacy into every deployment, serving with the kind of dedication that BM1 Pharris embodied on that terrible December morning. This sweatshirt honors all who served aboard Pharris during the 1986 deployment.
