USS Tarawa (LHA-1) was the lead ship of her class of amphibious assault ships, commissioned in 1976 and named for the famous Marine Corps battle at Tarawa Atoll in November 1943. Nicknamed "Eagle of the Sea," Tarawa combined the capabilities of a helicopter carrier, amphibious transport dock, and dock landing ship in a single hull. She served the Pacific Fleet for decades, embarking Marine Expeditionary Units on operations worldwide before her decommissioning in 2009.
