A Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser commissioned on September 18, 1993 and homeported in Norfolk, Virginia, Vella Gulf is named for the World War II Battle of Vella Gulf — a decisive night engagement in which U.S. Navy destroyers outmaneuvered and sank three Japanese destroyers in the Solomon Islands in August 1943. The 1999 MED deployment placed Vella Gulf at the tip of the spear during a period of significant operational activity in the Sixth Fleet area of responsibility.
