A Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser commissioned on September 18, 1993 and homeported in Norfolk, Virginia, Vella Gulf is named for the Battle of Vella Gulf — a decisive August 1943 night torpedo action in the Solomon Islands in which U.S. destroyers scored a decisive victory over Japanese forces. The 2017 MED deployment was one of her later major deployments as part of the U.S. Sixth Fleet. This sweatshirt honors the crew who served during that deployment.
