USS Nimitz (CVN-68) is the lead ship of the most successful class of nuclear-powered carriers ever built, commissioned in 1975 and named for Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, Commander in Chief of the Pacific Fleet during World War II. She has operated in every major ocean, served during the Iran Hostage Crisis, and deployed repeatedly to the Persian Gulf and western Pacific. One of the most storied warships in American history, she continues to serve as a symbol of U.S. naval power.
