USS Peterson (DD-969) was a Spruance-class destroyer named for Lieutenant Commander Carl J. Peterson, a riverine warfare officer killed in action on April 2, 1969, while commanding a river patrol squadron in the Mekong Delta during the Vietnam War — posthumously decorated for his extraordinary heroism. Commissioned in 1976, Peterson deployed throughout the Cold War to the Mediterranean, North Atlantic, and Persian Gulf before decommissioning in 2001 after twenty-five years of service.
