In early 1971, South Vietnamese forces launched Operation Lam Son 719 — a bold push into Laos to cut the Ho Chi Minh Trail — and USS America (CVA-66) provided the air cover that made it possible. Flying from Yankee Station in the Gulf of Tonkin, America's air wing struck enemy supply lines, flew close air support, and kept contested skies overhead as allied forces pushed into some of the heaviest defenses of the war. Vietnamization was in full swing, but the crew of CVA-66 proved that American airpower remained the decisive edge in Southeast Asia.
