The 1972-73 deployment of USS America (CVA-66) was one of the most consequential of the entire Vietnam War. When North Vietnam launched the massive Easter Offensive on March 30, 1972, CVA-66 surged into the Gulf of Tonkin and flew relentlessly through Operation Linebacker — the most intensive air campaign of the war — helping blunt the invasion and turn the tide. Operation Linebacker II followed in December, and the Paris Peace Accords were signed January 27, 1973. The crew of CVA-66 was there from the darkest days of the Easter Offensive to the moment peace was finally within reach.
