USS Antietam (CG-54) was built for the Cold War but proved herself deployment by deployment in the Pacific. Her 1988-89 maiden cruise was the first test — a Ticonderoga-class cruiser named for a historic Civil War battle, sailing the Western Pacific with the Aegis Combat System and a crew proving their ship's worth. Whatever came next, the Sailors who stood watch on that first deployment established the tradition that defined Antietam for decades to come.
