In the spring of 2013, North Korea made its most dangerous moves yet — conducting its third nuclear test in February and issuing a flood of threats against U.S. forces and South Korea. USS Antietam (CG-54) was there. Homeported in Yokosuka, Japan, the Aegis cruiser deployed into the Sea of Japan as tensions reached a crisis pitch, her long-range radar tracking ballistic missile launches and her Standard Missiles ready to intercept. Named for the Civil War's most devastating single day, Antietam has always met the worst threats head-on. The 2013 deployment put that heritage on display — a ship standing the line between an unstable nuclear state and the allies who depend on American resolve.
