President Bush's announcement of the Surge in January 2007 — an infusion of 30,000 additional troops under General David Petraeus — represented a recommitment to victory when retreat seemed tempting. USS Anzio (CG-68) deployed during this pivotal period, operating in the 5th Fleet's area of responsibility and providing the Aegis air defense umbrella over a region in transition.
