USS Arleigh Burke (DDG-51) was commissioned on July 4, 1991 — Independence Day — a fitting birthday for the lead ship of what would become the most successful destroyer class in U.S. Navy history. Named for Fleet Admiral Arleigh "31-Knot" Burke, the destroyer commander who never lost a ship in 22 engagements across the Solomon Islands campaign in World War II, DDG-51 set the standard for every destroyer that followed. Her 1995 deployment took her into the Adriatic as the long agony of the Bosnian War finally drew to a close. The Dayton Accords, signed in November 1995, ended four years of brutal conflict — and American warships like Arleigh Burke were part of the military presence that made that peace possible.
